About This Calculator

What it calculates
Distance in km (and miles) from a given step count, based on height or a user-provided step length.
Formula
km = steps × step length (m) ÷ 1,000
Stride estimation
Step length = height × ratio. Ratio: Male 0.415, Female 0.413, Other 0.414.

How to Convert Steps to Kilometres

Converting steps to kilometres requires knowing your step length — the distance covered each time one foot lands in front of the other. Once you know your step length, the formula is straightforward:

Distance (km) = Steps × Step Length (m) ÷ 1,000

If you haven't measured your step length, this calculator estimates it from your height using a research-backed biomechanics ratio: approximately 41.4% of your height. If you have measured your own stride, enter it in the optional Stride Override field for a more accurate result.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Select unit system: Metric (cm) or Imperial (ft/in) for height and stride inputs.
  2. Enter your step count: Type the number of steps (0–1,000,000).
  3. Enter your height: Required unless you provide a stride override. Used to estimate step length.
  4. Select sex (optional): Adjusts the stride ratio — male 0.415, female 0.413, other 0.414.
  5. Enter stride override (optional): If you know your actual walking step length, enter it to override the height estimate.
  6. Click Calculate: See distance in km, the miles equivalent, stride used, and formula applied.

Formula and Worked Examples

Step Length (m) = Height (m) × Stride Ratio
Distance (km) = Steps × Step Length (m) ÷ 1,000
Distance (miles) = Distance (km) ÷ 1.60934

Example 1 — 10,000 Steps, Metric Height

  • Steps: 10,000 | Height: 170 cm (Female)
  • Step length = 1.70 × 0.413 = 0.7021 m
  • Distance = 10,000 × 0.7021 ÷ 1,000 = 7.021 km
  • Miles = 7.021 ÷ 1.60934 = 4.363 miles

Example 2 — 5,000 Steps, Imperial Height

  • Steps: 5,000 | Height: 5 ft 10 in = 70 in = 177.8 cm (Male)
  • Step length = 1.778 × 0.415 = 0.7379 m
  • Distance = 5,000 × 0.7379 ÷ 1,000 = 3.690 km
  • Miles = 3.690 ÷ 1.60934 = 2.293 miles

Frequently Asked Questions

Multiply your step count by your step length in metres, then divide by 1,000. The formula is: km = steps × stride_m ÷ 1,000. If you don't know your stride, estimate it as approximately 41.4% of your height.
For an average adult of 170 cm height, 1 km is approximately 1,400 to 1,500 steps. Taller people with longer strides take fewer steps per km; shorter people take more. Enter your height above for a personalised answer.
For an average adult with about 1,430 steps per km, 5 km is approximately 7,150 steps. For a shorter person with 1,600 steps per km, 5 km is about 8,000 steps. Use this calculator with your own height for an accurate personal estimate.
For an average adult of 170 cm, 10,000 steps equals approximately 7 to 7.5 km. For a taller person (180 cm male), 10,000 steps is around 7.5 km. For a shorter person (155 cm female), 10,000 steps is closer to 6.4 km.
Step length is estimated as approximately 41.5% of height for males, 41.3% for females, and 41.4% for the average. For example, a 170 cm person has an estimated step length of 170 × 0.414 = 70.4 cm. This is based on biomechanics research on average walking gait.
Yes. Enter your measured walking step length in the optional Stride Length field. This overrides the height-based estimate and gives a more accurate steps-to-km conversion. To measure your step, walk 10 steps on flat ground and divide the total distance by 10.
Yes. At a faster walking speed your stride length increases slightly, so each step covers more distance. The height-based estimate represents moderate-paced walking. For running, strides are typically 30–50% longer per step than walking strides of the same person.
The formula is: distance (km) = steps × step length (m) ÷ 1,000. Where step length (m) = height (m) × stride ratio (0.415 male, 0.413 female, 0.414 other). For example: 8,000 steps × 0.70 m ÷ 1,000 = 5.6 km.
